About Us

Hey! I'm Phoebe a 19-year-old from Christchurch, New Zealand trying to do her bit to help the planet.

A university design project I did earlier this year; Catastrawphic was the inspiration behind Straw Thing. This project was mainly focused on making the Wellington hospitality industry plastic-straw free, and involved a lot of research into the effects of plastic globally, especially in our oceans.

After the research we did for this project, I realised just how bad plastic pollution has become and I wanted to do something to help people take a small step toward plastic-free living.

I believe we all have a responsibility to reduce our own waste, so I created Straw Thing to enable others to start to take action. Even small things such as investing in reusable products such as stainless steel straws instead of plastic will add up and make a massive difference in the worldwide waste problem.

As well as reducing the use of plastic straws I wanted Straw Thing to be able to support the global movement against plastic. For every pack of Straws sold we will give one dollar to support Sustainable Coastlines, who are an amazing New Zealand charity that aim to look after our beautiful coastlines and waterways.

Every little bit helps and you can play your part too, join me in the quest to make our oceans plastic free!

Phoebe :)
